Sting & The Police is a compilation album issued by Sting, and released by A&M Records in 1997. Conceived at the time when Sting had just released his fifth solo effort, Mercury Falling (hence equalling his personal tally with the one of The Police), the album mixes a selection of Sting's Police-era songs with later hits recorded under his own name. It originally featured one new track, a remix of the 1978 song "Roxanne" by rap artist Sean "Puffy" Combs
The Police's calculated rock-reggae alloy was, after months of Transit van torment, hit material. Indeed, despite the trademark banana hair - bleached for an American gum commercial - Sting, lanky drummer Stewart Copeland and wizened Curved Air guitarist (sic) Andy Summers (already 35) could never have been called punks. When Sting went solo, six years and 40 million album sales later, he stopped being not punk, and not reggae, and went not jazz and not soul. Not a South American Kayapo Indian, sterner critics say he's not an actor. He's been a lot of things, yet Sting occupies.
In September 1981 Sting made his first live solo appearance, performing on all four nights of the fourth Amnesty International benefit The Secret Policeman's. The Police’s reggae rhythms and post-punk guitars may have placed them in the lineage of The Clash but they were a pop band at heart-witness the irresistible, blood-pumping choruses within Roxanne, Can’t Stand Losing You, and So Lonely. Those melodic impulses have continued throughout Sting’s solo career, even during his jazziest and most sombre excursions. From the stately simplicity of obsessive’s anthem Every Breath You Take to Fragile ’s acoustic melancholy, this is a testament to magnetic pop-writing. The Very Best of Sting and the Police Sting.
