Flashback: Dwight Yoakam, Buck Owens Take ‘Streets of Bakersfield’ to Number One. Duo topped the charts with the duet in 1988, and eight days later performed it on ‘Austin City Limits’. In 1986, Dwight Yoakam delivered a rhinestone-studded debut LP, Guitars, Cadillacs, Et. Etc. To anyone with a sense of country-music history, it was obvious Yoakam, a Kentucky native who broke into the genre on the West Coast, owed a huge debt to another sparkling entertainer: Buck Owens. He even dedicated that debut album to the legendary performer. Two albums later, Yoakam upped the ante on classic country with the magical Buenas Noches From a Lonely Room, and in the process he paid homage to one of his biggest inspirations by returning him to the spot he had been 20 times before.

Dwight Yoakam and Buck Owens met back in 1988 in Bakersfield, California. Owens was a "gentleman rancher" at that point in his career, according to Yoakam. Owens, who hadn't sung a duet in years, showed up to cheer on an adoring Yoakam at his concert. They ended up singing together on that stage in Bakersfield and the rest is history. Owens passed away in 2006 and Yoakam paid homage to him with an album of covers. Dwight Sings Buck came out in 2007 and included all of the classics, but not "Streets of Bakersfield". Yoakam claims performing Buck Owens' tunes during his live shows always gets the crowd going wild. As he puts it, "It's me and the audience being able to embrace Buck together. Alvis Edgar Owens, Jr. (August 12, 1929 - March 25, 2006), better known as Buck Owens, was an American singer and guitarist who had 21 No. 1 hits on the Billboard country music charts with his band, the Buckaroos. The 1966 album Carnegie Hall Concert was a smash hit and further cemented Buck Owens and the Buckaroos as more than just another honky tonk country band. They achieved crossover success on to the pop charts. During that year, R&B singer Ray Charles released cover versions of two of Owens' songs that became pop hits: "Crying Time" and "Together Again". In 1967, Owens and the Buckaroos toured Japan, a then-rare occurrence for a country musician. Streets of Bakersfield" is a 1973 song written by Homer Joy and popularized by Buck Owens.
