The Sei Solo a Violino senza Basso accompagnato (Six Solos for Violin Without Bass Accompaniment), as Bach titled them, firmly established the technical capability of the violin as a solo instrument. The pieces often served as archetypes for solo violin pieces by later generations of composers, including Eugène Ysaÿe and Béla Bartók. Correct Italian would be "sei soli". A solo sonata for violin would naturally have the continuo players and parts implied, here Bach himself tells us that Basso Continuo does not apply. The norm was set by Corelli's important solo sonatas of 1700 (op. 5) which may have been accompanied in a variety of ways, but here the Basso Continuo is the natural accompaniment to the 'solo' violin. clarinet and bassoon. horn, trumpet and trombone.

A bassoon sonata is a sonata for bassoon, often with piano accompaniment. Sonatas written for bassoon were relatively uncommon until the second half of the twentieth century. Occasionally, sonatas written for bassoon can also be performed on cello. The twentieth century also saw a greater proliferation of sonatas for solo bassoon and sonatas for bassoon in various duets with other instruments (such as cello or oboe). Unless otherwise noted, the pieces below are for bassoon and piano. François Devienne, six sonatas (1788?) Johann Friedrich Fasch, Sonata in C (authorship uncertain). Miguel de Lope, Sonata for bassoon and continuo (1791). Luigi Merci, six sonatas for bassoon or cello, Op. 3 (c. 1735). Michael Cunningham, Parisian Sonata, Op. 72 (1981). Pauls Dambis, Sonata (1979). William D. Davis, Sonata (1969). Serge de Gastyne, Sonatina, Op. 58 (1972).
