Daphnis et Chloé, ballet for orchestra, written in 1909-1912. Daphnis et Chloé was composed between 1909 and 1912, after a commission by Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, and is a setting of a scenario adapted by Mikhail Fokine from the Greek work of the same name by Longus. It was premiered on 8 June 1912.

The piece was originally written as a five-movement piano duet in 1910. In 1911, Ravel orchestrated the work. Ravel originally wrote Ma mère l'Oye as a piano duet for the Godebski children, Mimi and Jean, ages 6 and 7. Ravel dedicated this work for four hands to the children (just as he had dedicated an earlier work, Sonatine, to their parents).

My personal listener's bottom line complaint mainly is: I only wish we got the Daphnis et Chloe ballet, whole, in super audio surround. The opening of the second suite from Ravel's complete ballet is properly clean, clear. and what's more to my ears, fresh and sparkling. Compared to Jun Markl in Lyon on Naxos, Nezet Seguin in Rotterdam is warmer, and to that extent, less fiercely etched than Markl.
