Garcia and Ilia Belorukov are regular collaborators (as Wolkokrots) while Monteiro has released two records with García and one with Belorukov. All three have in common a practice based on physically challenging sounds and textures sourced from minute gestures and fragile materials like paper, strings, small objects or manipulated acoustic instruments like flute and accordeon.

The vision of the band is of a collective, organic approach to improvised performance, where each member is a leader and can shape the direction of the music as such. Compositions are all contributed by the members and are used a springboard for exploration of sounds, textures, harmony and rhythm.

Treppenwitz, how did this name come about? When I was trying to think of a name for the project, one of the things I was aware of was not wanting to fall into the tradition of naming it after the person running it, . the Matthew Aplin trio.
