He wrote operas on themes from Russian literature, such as Ivan Susanin (1836) and Ruslan and Ludmila (1842). Due to strong criticism at the end of his career, he was forced to leave Russia and came back only several years later. Pyotr Tchaikovsky (1840-1893). Tchaikovsky remains a leading figure in Russian classical music decades after his death. He completed it after his family was evacuated from the besieged city. It was performed by the Leningrad Philarmonic and transmitted all around by loudspeakers while the city was being occupied by German troops. The Jazz Composer's Orchestra is a 1968 album by the Jazz Composer's Orchestra recorded over a period of six months with Michael Mantler as composer, leader and producer. Many of the key figures in avant-garde jazz from the time contributed on the album including Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Gato Barbieri, Larry Coryell, Roswell Rudd, and Carla Bley. The album's finale features a two-part concerto for Cecil Taylor and orchestra.
Teddy Charles (1928-2012) on JAZZ. Teddy remained in California in 1953, helping to develop the sound that would become known as West Coast jazz. After listening to his fabulous Prestige album Coolin’ with trumpeter Idrees Sulieman, I buzzed Teddy with huge excitement and praise. After about a minute, Teddy said, Listen, I have to go-but don’t hang up.
