Samurai is Joakim's follow-up to his 2014 LP, Tropics Of Love. The press release says the 13-track album was influenced by his journeys between NYC, Tokyo and Paris, as well as new age music and Yukio Mishima’s book, Hagakure: Samurai Ethics & Modern Japan. It follows 2016 singles for Life & Death and the Brazilian imprint Mareh Music. The eclectic new album from French DJ and producer Joakim is unified only in its consistent oddity. He avoids conventional song structures, drawing inspiration from new age, funk, and krautrock. However, Joakim’s latest trick is to mostly abandon any expectation of straightforward dance-rock on Samurai. Some precedent for this could be cobbled together from his past albums’ subtler moments, which were occasionally overshadowed by overtly adrenaline-boosting tracks.

Samurai is the second album Tigersushi founder Joakim recorded since he moved from his hometown of Paris to New York City, but it's the first where he seems to really explore his new habitat, and all the wonder and excitement of moving to a new location. The album was inspired by unpredictable late-night jaunts around the city, so it has a suitably dreamy, shape-shifting feel to it, with surprises waiting at every turn.
