Description

A video in which I show the Joy Division Vinyl Boxset, In Memory released in 2007, in detail.

The discography of English rock band Joy Division consists of two studio albums, four live albums, twelve compilation albums, three extended plays, and five singles.

Closer is the second and final studio album by English rock band Joy Division, released on 18 July 1980 by Factory Records. Produced by Martin Hannett, it was Joy Division's first posthumous album and was released two months after the suicide of the band's lead singer and lyricist Ian Curtis. The album reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart and peaked at No. 3 in New Zealand in September 1981. Closer was also named NME Album of the Year. It was remastered and re-released in 2007.

Still is a compilation album by Joy Division, consisting of previously released and unreleased studio material and a live recording of Joy Division's last concert, performed at Birmingham University.

Joy Division Album Discography. Anything not listed below is probably a promo or a bootleg. Please note: It would take many years to put every version of every release on these pages and the results would be pretty boring so each listing generally refers to the first release. In many cases this means the UK vinyl release but there are exceptions. Joy Division's two "proper" albums were Unknown Pleasures and Closer. Both excellent and both quite different as the Joy Division sound evolved considerably between the two. Unknown Pleasures was stark and minimalist while Closer was more poignant being recorded in the final months of Ian's life. These two albums are essential for anyone new to Joy Division. Substance complemented Unknown Pleasures and Closer by featuring the best of the non-album studio recordings.

Joy Division were a British rock band formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. They were originally named Stiff Kittens (2), then changed their name to Warsaw (3) and finally became Joy Division before recording and releasing their first 7" EP " An Ideal For Living ". Ian Curtis (vocal, occasional guitar), Bernard Sumner (guitar, keyboards), Peter "Hooky" Hook (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Stephen Morris (aka "The Human Drum Machine") (drums, percussion).

Peter Hook, Joy Division& bassist, spoke about the album and Hannett& production much later on: & definitely didn& turn out sounding the way I wanted it,& Hook revealed to Mojo in 2006. But now I can see that Martin did a good job on it. There& no two ways about it: Martin Hannett created the Joy Division sound. BeatRace is LIVE! Enter now! Get Free Audio Ear Training. Disclaimer: this page is not written by from the point of view of a Joy Division fanatic and is not generally intended for narrow-perspective Joy Division fanatics. If you are deeply offended by criticism, non-worshipping approach to your favourite artist, or opinions that do not match your own, do not read any further. I can name at least one album parts of which sounded extremely close to this one already one year before that: Wire's Chairs Missing (no doubt, also an influence). Back there, Colin Newman and his croonies were going for a very similar effect. But Wire suffer from being way too "intellectual" about their approach: Chairs Missing was a curious experiment, a Captain Beefheart of an album, whereas Joy Division, and Ian Curtis in particular, actually mean what they're playing/singing.

Joy Division, like many of their Manchester peers, were inspired by the DIY anti-ethos of the Sex Pistols; they just didn't know what to do with it at first. So, shaped and prodded by notorious provocateur Hannett (who would turn the heat in the studio down low enough for everyone to see their breath), the group embraced space, ambience, and an imposing austerity.
