As its title indicates, Zulu Heartbeat is heavily influenced by the rhythms and culture of Africa's Zulu tribe. But the music of Mamelang, an interracial group from South Africa, isn't traditional tribal music - rather, it is modern South African pop with a heavy Zulu influence. Mamelang's songs tend to be very reflective and relaxed, and its lyrics are quite substantial - of course, anyone who doesn't speak Zulu or Sotho won't understand any of them.

When Paul Simon tapped Ladysmith Black Mambazo for his Graceland album in 1986, the world was exposed to the gorgeously caressing sounds of Zulu harmony groups from South Africa. Surprisingly, there have been few other attempts to hybridize this music. Mamelang is a project with two British synthesists and a collection of South African male and female singers that brings this sound into richer instrumental terrain.
