Man IT’s hard to believe this is blokkies joubert the hooker in the springbok scrum cause he’s old and grey and he sits in his chair in the slanting winter sun but he made his name with that wonderful game that he played in 1931. Well he sits in the lounge of the old age home just a north of beaufort west and he watches a . program of the springbok rugby test as the images flicker upon the screen he can hear the manne call they say hak hom hak hom blokkies, blokkies hak daai ball en ons sê: druk hulle, druk hulle bokkies, druk hulle.

His follow-up album, Die Verhaal van Blokkies Joubert, a portrait of a has-been Springbok rugby player, rocketed him into the public eye and produced the singles Blokkies Joubert and Die Royal Hotel both of which topped singles charts on various South African Radio stations. The album reached number 11 on the South African LP charts. His only other singles chart success was with Stoksielalleen from the Kwaai album, however he did chart with Delicious Monster, Hanepootpad and Kwaai in the albums charts. In 1986 he collaborated with Petersen on the highly acclaimed stage musical District Six, a politically influenced musical telling the story of the people of District Six in Cape Town, South Africa that were forcibly removed from the area during apartheid. It was produced by the Baxter Theatre and his wife, Renaye Kramer, and opened in April 1987.

David Kramer is a well-known South African singer, songwriter, and theater director. He is best known for the musicals that he wrote with Taliep Petersen. As a result, the government banned the album. Nevertheless, Kramer gained great success as a singer and songwriter. Some of his hits were Blokkies Joubert, Royal Hotel, Montagu, Stoksielalleen, and the very popular So Long Skipskop. In 1986 Kramer and Petersen began working on their first musical together. The show, District Six, opened in 1987. Later productions included Fairyland (1990), Crooners (1992), and Poison (1992). Kat and the Kings (1995) was one of Kramer and Petersen’s most successful musicals.

David Kramer exists, but he is not really an Afrikaner. In fact, his grandfather was a Jewish immigrant from Lithuania. Yet he has become an object of a cult among Afrikaners, mainly as a result of the songs he sings about Blokkies Joubert, an old rugby hero who is the most conspicuous character in the gallery of Afrikaners brought to life by Mr. Kramer's songs. In the musical portrayal, the aging athlete props up the bar of a small-town hotel, mixing reminiscences of his glory days with despair about the present and future.
