Years of legal complications followed, and now it will finally debut at the DOC NYC festival on 12 November, with the support of the singer's estate. It was filmed over two nights at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, when Franklin recorded her Amazing Grace album. However, Pollack - who later won an Oscar for Out of Africa - made a mistake during the 1972 recording.

Today we explore Aretha Franklin’s immensely personal 1970 album Spirit in the Dark. She’d shaken off a slow start in the music business after squandering years of her prime singing schlocky jazz on Columbia Records for a producer who once said, with a straight face, My vision for Aretha had nothing to do with rhythm and blues. She’d cemented her legend with Respect, a minor Otis Redding track that she elevated to a social-justice masterpiece.
The tunes are an eclectic batch, and while "Baby, I Love You" was the hit of the album, Franklin turns in strong versions of "Satisfaction," "You Are My Sunshine," "Night Life," "Ain't Nobody (Gonna Turn Me Around)," and a quirky cover of "96 Tears" for good measure. An essential addition to her discography.
Aretha Franklin (March 25, 1942 - August 16, 2018) was a Memphis, Tennessee born and Detroit, Michigan reared American iconic gospel, soul, and R&B singer, songwriter and pianist. Many have called her "The Queen Of Soul" and "Lady Soul". She is renowned for her soul and R&B recordings (on many, of which, she accompanied herself on keyboards and piano, a skill she learned at an early age, learning to play by ear, according to lifetime friend Smokey Robinson) but was also adept at jazz, rock, blues, pop, and gospel.
OMG! Aretha Franklin has officially announced her retirement! After nearly six decades in the music business, the Queen of Soul has decided to graciously bow out this year after one last album. Get the deets! With 57 years of hard work under her belt, countless chart-topping songs, and awards, Aretha Franklin, 74, finally feels like she has earned the R-E-S-P-E-C-T she deserves! The legendary singer paid a visit to Detroit TV station Local 4 on Feb. 7, where she announced that she would be retiring after this year. Aretha confirmed that she will be releasing her 42nd and final studio album in Sept. 2017, and it sounds epic! Of course, several of the songs are going to be produced by, and of course there’s only one Stevie, right?
