Breakneck Static formed in 2004 from the ashes of Southend indie rock band, Calico, when guitarist Adrian Lane met singer Machiko Kimura, who had recently moved to London from Tokyo. Influenced by the Japanese noise scene (bands such as Zeni Geva, Yona Kit, Melt Banana), the original line-up was completed by Adrian's sister Debbie Lane on drums, Matt Elmes on bass and James Beighton on guitar.
