Cornelius Cardew (7 May 1936–13 December 1981) was an English avant-garde composer, and founder (with Howard Skempton and Michael Parsons) of the Scratch Orchestra, an experimental performing ensemble. He later rejected the avant-garde in favour of a politically motivated 'people's liberation music'. His sons Horace Cardew and Walter Cardew are also musicians. We Only Want The Earth ‎(CD, Album).

But that's because Cardew's avant garde infatuation was really only an upbeat to what would become his life's work, attempting new ways of thinking about the relationship between musical organisation, whether at the level of individual compositions or institutions, and social and political change.
