Dawn Explosion, the third and final album by Captain Beyond, was released in 1977. The band had broken up four years before, but Warner Bros. Records signed a deal with the band's original label, Capricorn Records, and contacted the band members asking them to reunite. Because original singer Rod Evans could not be contacted, Captain Beyond held auditions and picked Willy Daffern to replace him. The drummer position was taken by original member Bobby Caldwell rather than his successor Marty Rodriguez.

While the first Captain Beyond album was pretty thick with social and political themes, this last offering from the band is more of a last-hurrah for the bluesy hard rock that most of its members were known for both before and after their Captain Beyond days. The pedigree of all the members was top-notch, but overall this is a rather lackluster album that failed to take off creatively or commercially, and the band dissolved shortly after its release  . Captain Beyond has a rather legendary status in the ranks of hard '70s rock. Their fame is actually in the "cult status" category. Dawn Explosion, their third album, was a good disc, but really did not live up to the greatness of the first two releases. Still, in showcasing the group's unique blend of hard rock, psychedelia, and progressive-type arrangements, there is definitely some strong material present
