Paul Dessau (19 December 1894 – 28 June 1979) was a German composer and conductor. He collaborated with Bertold Brecht and composed incidental music for his plays, and several operas based on them. Dessau was born in Hamburg into a musical family. His grandfather, Moses Berend Dessau, was a cantor in the Hamburg synagogue. From 1909, Dessau majored in violin, studying with Florian Zajic at the a Conservatory in Berlin

Although he adopted the twelve-tone system in mid-career, he had to forego use of it in many compositions owing to his collaborations with Bertolt Brecht, who favored popular musical styles. On this cd his opera "Puntila" on a libretto by Bertold Brecht. Dessau was born into a Jewish family in Hamburg. As early as 1910, he had begun an opera – Giuditta, which he did not finish – and soon embarked upon other works, like the vocal piece Inspiration (1912 - 1914) and his piano sonata (1914 - 1915). In 1914, he received his first important post, that of kapellmeister at Bremen's Tivoli Theater. His opera Die Verurteilung des Lukullus (1949 - 1951; libretto by Brecht) drew sharp criticism from the Party. He also wrote Gebrauchsmusik (utility music) for the propaganda of the German Democratic Republic. At the same time he lobbied for the musical avant-garde (. Lanzelot, 1967-9 (text: Heiner Müller and Ginka Tsholakova), world premiere on 19 December 1969 at the Staatsoper.
