System is the fifth studio album by British soul/R&B singer Seal, released on 12 November 2007. In his online blog, Seal described the album as a return to his dance roots and his best album since his debut. The album's opening half dazzles. The array of sounds-electro ("Adel Crag Microdot"), broken beat ("Scrambled In LS1"), hardcore ("Brainstorm")-feels distinctively 2017 even as it looks backwards. Belief System falters when Woolford changes tack to explore ambient music. Inspired by his recent sound design work for film, these tracks are suitably cinematic, but more Hans Zimmer than Vangelis. The heavy strokes, hammy strings and big textures feel contrived in this context. It's an easy misstep to forgive considering Belief System contains many of Woolford's best dance tracks yet.

Belief System, Special Request’s second studio album, completes the process that began not long after the release of Soul Music. It’s a record crammed full of contrasting ideas and mish-mashed nostalgia; it’s also absurdly long, with 23 tracks clocking over 100 minutes. If Soul Music and Modern Warfare were quaint in the way they got straight to the point and then relentlessly hammered it home, Belief System’s prolonged, shapeshifting arc could be taken as another tweak to the project’s formula. But the the individual tracks often don’t measure up to the album’s inflated ambitions.

Belief System is Special Request’s sophomore LP and represents a collection of distorted synths, warped acid loops, heavy nostalgic baselines and garage samples. Although Belief System develops upon Woolford’s already dark and poignant techno, oftentimes throughout the release we are left bemused and bewildered by this 100+ minute epic. Owing to it’s length, Belief System is best conceptualised in three distinct segments. The third phase of the album, comprising nine tracks and lasting over 30 minutes, unfortunately bears no fruit. These tracks offer an ambient soundscape whereby the listener feels transported into a hazy, open field, wandering aimlessl. hich at times can be cathartic. However, at this moment, Woolford may have lost those who did not intend to be transported to such a desolate place.

The album's first part is a mixture of dark, suspenseful electro and break-heavy dancefloor killers, sequenced as a peaks-and-valleys DJ journey. Woolford does bring the hardcore, but he places value in buildup and payoff.
