Sure it's still simple dance-pop, but this time she (and a team of producers and writers - including Kurtis Mantronik - it must be said) has put together an album that works as a piece. It's stylish without being smarmy, retro without being ironic, and its energy never gets annoying. In other words: a near perfect pop record.

Her 1994 album Kylie Minogue aimed to reinvent her as a credible performer, distancing herself from her earlier work. Her most personal and experimental album to date Impossible Princess was released in 1997. It is noted for its collaborations with Manic Street Preachers, and for all lyrics being written by herself. In 2005, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, forcing her to postpone all recording commitments. In 2007, she resumed her career with the release of her tenth album X. In 2010, she released her eleventh studio album, Aphrodite. In 2012, to celebrate her twenty-fifth year in the music industry, she released her third major greatest hits album The Best of Kylie Minogue and the orchestral album The Abbey Road Sessions.

Long stretches prove mysteriously hookless, arid, or burdened by Minogue foregrounding a voice that withers in the glare of the spotlight. 30. There's something rote and antiseptic about the album's party mood-the electro-beats' clean squelch, the undercooked hooks, the odd primness of Kylie's singing.

For her ninth studio album, she has chucked out the chintz once more, turning her back on the dancefloor disco that filled 2001's Fever to create a slower-burning record that seems unlikely to spark any nationwide dance routines. Then again, it is all too easy to underestimate pop's own Thumbelina by judging her songs before you have heard them 50 times a week on the radio, down the wine bar and in the gym.
