Cane Hill Smile (Rise Records). And direct your ears this way, because you’re not going to like this. It’s very rare that you come across a record that is so openly offensive, so blatantly difficult to listen to without squirming, so unnerving, and yet so perfect for being so. Give a warm welcome to Smile, the debut full-length release from the New Orleans-based band Cane Hill that every metal fan should have in their music library. The album jumps around from grotesque, yet whimsical societal criticism ( (The New) Jesus ) to hints of cyber goth ( St. Veronica ) to straight early 2000s hard rock ballad ( You’re So Wonderful ) and never concretely settles on one direction. Every track more or less sounds like Cane Hill listened to a different band each day and wrote a song inspired by it the next, like those awkward collages little kids are forced to make in art class that oddly are still aesthetically pleasing.

Cane Hill - Smile 10 songs lyrics: MGGDA, (The New) Jesus, True Love, St. Veronica, Fountain of Youth, Cream Pie, You're So Wonderful, Ugly Model Mannequin, Screwtape, Strange Candy.

Album closer Strange Candy summons visions of Alice In Chains and mid ‘90s-era Metallica, with Witts’ vocals twanging like James Hetfield before everything goes black, a wah pedal emerges and the drums reel you back in as though Kirk Hammett and Lars Ulrich were hiding in the studio. Smile’ has its fingers in many pies, and that’s where the slight criticisms arise: it’s a bit too derivative. The whispered/crooned pre-chorus leading into the massive, anthemic final hook is a great tool, but Cane Hill utilise it in basically every single song, rendering things a tad predictable. The majority of Cane Hill came straight out of college to record this. While most of us sat and numbed our brains watching Breaking Bad, Cane Hill numbed their brains bashing out top drawer nu metal. And it is nu metal, just done extremely well in 2016.

Cane Hill entered the studio with producer WZRD BLD in Los Angeles in January 2016 to begin production for Smile. Recording took place over four weeks. On April 22, 2016, the band released their single "The (New) Jesus" and announced their debut studio album Smile, which was released on July 15, 2016 through Rise Records. The music video for the single was released on the same day and sparked controversy among music critics and fans. They released the single "True Love", accompanied with its music video, on. May 29, 2016
