First recorded in 1951 by the Trapp Family Singers, the song was further popularized by a 1958 recording by the Harry Simeone Chorale; the Simeone version was re-released successfully. In 1988, The Little Drummer Boy: A Christmas Festival was released on CD by Casablanca Records, and subsequently, on Island Records. Harry Simeone, who in 1964 had signed with Kapp Records, recorded a new version of "The Little Drummer Boy" in 1965 for his album O' Bambino: The Little Drummer Boy. Simeone recorded the song a third and final time.

There were two separate recordings of "The Little Drummer Boy", the first, in 1958 and then this new stereo recording from the 1965 album entitled, "O BAMBINO". This CD version contains all of those tracks from the vinyl album with the exception of the last ( track, "SING OF A MERRY CHRISTMAS".
