Hysteria is the fourth studio album by British synthpop band The Human League, released on 7 May 1984. Following the worldwide success of their 1981 album Dare, the band struggled to make a successful follow-up and the sessions for Hysteria were fraught with problems. The album name itself is taken from the problematic recording period. Producers Martin Rushent and Chris Thomas both left the project which would eventually be finished by producer Hugh Padgham.

The album was produced by Martin Rushent and The Human League, and recorded at Rushent's Genetic Sound studios near Reading, Berkshire between March and September 1981. It was released in the UK on 16 October 1981. Dare remains the group's most successful and best known album and has been re-issued several times since 1981 in various formats. The album contains four hit singles and also spawned the remix album Love and Dancing (1982), one of the first of its kind. Sleeve design and variations. Main article: Dare album sleeve design.

The Human League had shown much of this on their early singles, such as "Empire State Human," but on Dare! they simply gelled, as their style was supported by music and songs with emotional substance. That doesn't mean that the album isn't arty, since it certainly is, but that's part of its power - the self-conscious detachment enhances the postmodern sense of emotional isolation, obsession with form over content, and love of modernity for its own sake
