Until his untimely death, Jim Croce was a force to be reckoned with on radio playlists. Photographs & Memories repackages some of his best work. Romantic acoustic-oriented songs were his hallmark, and songs like "Time in a Bottle," were huge hits because of their easy sentimentality. I Got a Name" was the singer as well-worn folk traveler, while "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and even "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" followed standard boogie chord progressions, albeit with Croce's softer rock feel. Jim Croce is overlooked by a lot of people because his music career was so short. He died less than two years after he had his first major hit. However, as the songs on this record demonstrate, he showed a lot of talent in the brief time he was making records.

This is especially evident in listening to his album tracks, many of which are remarkably potent and arguably could have been hits themselves. All of Croce's biggest singles are here, including "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," "Time in a Bottle," and "Operator," as well as overlooked album tracks such as "New York's Not My Home" and "Lover's Cross.

Plenty of singer/songwriters were scoring folk-flecked hits in the first half of the '70s, but few combined poignant balladry with a buoyant sense of humor like Jim Croce. As this first-rate collection shows, Croce was capable of knocking out a good-time romp like "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" one minute and delivering a tender, bewitchingly melodic tune like "Time in a Bottle" the next, and sending them both to the top of the pop charts

But to judge from the posthumous PHOTOGRAPHS & MEMORIES – HIS GREATEST HITS, his talents were second to none. The platinum-certified collection's 14 songs include all of Croce's Top 40 singles, including You Don't Mess Around With Jim, Time In A Bottle and Bad, Bad Leroy Brown, which topped the . chart on this day in 1973. Warm, thoughtful and sure to bring a smile to your face, PHOTOGRAPHS & MEMORIES captures a gifted performer at his very best.
