Roberta Joan "Joni" Mitchell, CC (née Anderson; born November 7, 1943) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and painter. Mitchell's work is highly respected by critics, and she has deeply influenced fellow musicians in a diverse range of genres. Her lyrics are noted for their developed poetics, addressing social and environmental ideals. Song to a Seagull (also known as Joni Mitchell) is Joni Mitchell's debut album. Produced by David Crosby, the album was recorded in 1967 at Sunset Sound, and released in 1968 by Reprise Records.

Through her life, Joni Mitchell has worked herself beyond several brushes with self-destruction to keep playing. That is, itself, an accomplishment. Then, there’s the music. When Joni Mitchell missed Woodstock, she stayed back in a hotel room in New York and wrote a song instead. She was to appear on The Dick Cavett Show the next day. As luck would have it, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (who did play Woodstock) got back to New York in time to appear on the same show. Mitchell describes being devastated at missing such an important cultural event. Ultimately, Canada has rooted Joni Mitchell through some of her greatest life teachings. When she was confused and tired following her ascent in the folk genre, Joni went to the wild bush of Canada to live without electricity for a year. Although she journeyed back to the music world, Mitchell would not reclaim her previous commercial standing.

Hejira is the eighth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. The songs on the album were largely written by Mitchell on a trip by car from Maine back to Los Angeles, California, with prominent imagery including highways, small towns and snow. The photographs of Mitchell on the front and back cover were taken by Norman Seeff and appear against a backdrop of Lake Mendota, in Madison, Wisconsin, after an ice storm.

This study of Mitchell is a model of musical biography in DVD form. Over two hours we get her life story in perfectly matched words, music and images. Inside the new Uncut: Pink.

Joni Mitchell once called fame "a glamorous misunderstanding. As America's finest living Canadian songwriter (tied with Neil Young), few musicians have understood its nature so well. In the 1960s and 70s, Mitchell was Mary Magdalene to Dylan's folk-rock messiah, making music that was bittersweet and relatable, carrying what Dylan begat even further. There is hardly a more feminist topic than striving for a freedom that life and love has never allowed you. On "Woman of Heart and Mind", it's hard to tell whether she is mocking herself or the man she is singing to (or both): "Push your papers/ Win your medals/ Fuck your strangers/ Don't it leave you on the empty side /I'm looking for affection and respect. On Roses, Mitchell sounds like a woman who's had enough of everyone else's shit, an attitude that certainly put her in line with the libbers.

Sleeve rear:
"Joni Mitchell's career has been guided by an artistic integrity that is an example to all. Crossing musical boundaries with scorn, she has garnered critical acclaim whichever route she chooses to follow. From bands like Crosby Stills Nash and Young covering her early work through to working with be-bop legend Charles Mingus, to her most recent and still as highly acclaimed work; "Woman of Heart and Mind" documents the incredible achievements and influence that Joni Mitchell has had against all the odds in this ever more conformist world.
With over 40 archive musical excepts and interviews with collaborators including David Crosby, James Taylor and Herbie Hancock, plus archive and contemporary interviews with Joni herself, this DVD tells for the first time the full remarkable story of a performer and songwriter which clearly justifies her iconic status."
