Chico Freeman (tripling on this album on tenor, soprano and bass clarinet) made many records from 1977-84, and all are worth picking up by fans of adventurous jazz. No Time Left is an album by American jazz saxophonist Chico Freeman recorded in 1979 for the Italian Black Saint label. All compositions by Chico Freeman.
The album consists three extended-time performances. No Time Left is an uptempo quartet performance with an attractive theme built upon glisses and grace notes, with Hoggard coming in later and adding a different ambience, as does a more mellow, bluesy section near the end. But it’s the trio that starts things off. Freeman furiously unleashes his art on the tenor sax, conjuring up inventive phrases and runs at light speed as Moye, in duo, presses him along. Moye also has a dazzling, inventive drum solo. This definitely reminds one of the Coltrane and Elvin days of the 1960s. This is a very worthy addition to the Chico Freeman discography that some may have overlooked because of Chico’s time living, playing, and recording in Europe, as here he fronts an impressive quartet.
