Poems, Prayers & Promises is the fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter John Denver. It was released in April, 1971. This album was Denver's commercial breakthrough, and contained several of his most popular songs, such as "Poems, Prayers, and Promises", "My Sweet Lady", "I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado", "Sunshine on My Shoulders", and "Take Me Home, Country Roads", which would become one of Denver's signature songs.

Lyrics to "Poems, Prayers And Promises" song by John Denver: I've been lately thinking about my life's time, all the things I've done and how it's been  . And talk of poems and prayers and promises and things that we believe in. How sweet it is to love someone, how right it is to care.

from album: Poems, Prayers & Promises (1971). I've been lately thinking about my life's time All the things I've done and how it's been And I can't help believing in my own mind I know I'm gonna hate to see it end I've seen a lot of sunshine slept out in the rain Spent a night or two all on my own. I've known my lady's pleasures had myself some friends And spent a time or two in my own home.

After several albums in which he had allowed cover versions to dominate the sets, John Denver returned with an album, Poems, Prayers & Promises, in which he had written over half the songs

Or maybe that’s just the charm of it, that which makes ‘Poems, Prayers & Promises’ so compelling. Simplistic as it may be, its spirit and outlook is certainly contagious – that of standing resilient and kind and perhaps even smiling in spite of it all. A yearning to live and live well, tucked between textured melodies and warm, oaken tones. Seeing the best in everything and everyone, including oneself, no matter how obscured. Brave, dumb positivity.
