Jun 30, 2019- Was born on April. 7, 1922, in Jesus Maria district, Havana, Cuba, the 'Cradle of Rumberos', steeped in the West African traditions of his ancestors, "Mongo" or 'Chief of the Village' was the most influential performer in the AFC Jazz idiom. A master, with a hollowed or dry technique of playing the drums, take a blindfold test and you would know it was Mongo playing. The most spiritual musician of his time, Mongo's "Flash of the Spirit" & 1000 kilowatt smile was last seen on 2/1/03.

MONGO SANTAMARIA is a latin rock/soul, funk jazz, bop afro-cuban jazz music artist. Afro-Cuban Jazz, Latin Rock/Soul, Funk Jazz, Bop, Cuba. Ramón "Mongo" Santamaría (April 7, 1922 in Havana, Cuba – February 1, 2003) was an Afro-Cuban Latin jazz percussionist. He is most famous for being the composer of the jazz standard "Afro Blue," recorded by John Coltrane among others.
