Venice beach homeless man feeding birds For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? Matthew 6:25-26.

The barrage of midtempo filler/killer that follows almost brings the album to a complete halt, but the Stills redeem themselves on the rowdy, horn-led "It Takes Time," "Destroyer," and "Baby Blues," the latter a winsome duet with Metric/Broken Social Scene's Emily Haines that shows they can balance the two styles with grace and dignity. Without Feathers may lack its predecessor's apocalyptic vision, but it's a new direction for a group that was heading down an awfully familiar - and extremely congested - road.

My Dear Melancholy, – whose title has a comma at the end, as if Tesfaye is beginning a letter to his own sadness – isn’t an album or EP so much as the equivalent of Tesafaye standing in his ex’s garden at 3am, pissed, holding a ghettoblaster over his head and bellowing along to Chicago’s If You Leave Me Now fo. Every track either has the author protesting about being chucked, announcing he doesn’t care that he’s been chucked, or pleading to be unchucked. He wheedles, he cajoles, he begs.

The Weeknd’s new six-song album finds him in limbo between the bleary-eyed vibe of his early mixtapes and the bulletproof pop stylings of his last two albums. While My Dear Melancholy, makes for a slight curio in the Weeknd’s discography, it also feels like an unnecessary step backwards following the down-for-whatever approach of his recent work. There’s nothing wrong with reflecting on the past, but sometimes it’s better to just leave it there.
