Quintessence were a UK psychedelic rock band of the 60's-70's, not only influenced like most bands of the time by entheogens/altered states of consciousness, Quintessence also took another direction, uniting rock music with hindu mysticism, the band even had it's own personal guru!

Brahman, which would be on their third album Dive Deep (March 1971 reaching number 43), is here a fourth take of an often-worked song with a middle jazzy riff written by Shiva and different guitar solo. One of the joys of this release is Allan Mostert’s extended solos that were a live delight but rarely on recordings (we now see due to vinyl’s space limitations). His acid- swirler building to a head-topping crescendo on Sea Of Immortality (oddly absent from Island’s compilation Oceans Of Bliss in the 90s) is one of the greatest of the period and here unabridged: this release features two more. This release from another time-zone seems in another part of the universe too. It is not too extravagant to say that when Quintessence split so did an era.

Spirits From Another Time attempts to rectify this, with two CDs of outtakes and alternative recordings from the vaults, many forgotten by their creators and in need of reconstruction; two cuts here even feature new guitar and vocals from Dave ‘Maha Dev’ Codling and Phil ‘Shiva’ Jones. The results are impressive, though Quintessence were clearly at their best when they abandoned their scenester pretensions and Jones’ slightly hammy vocals, and instead launched into relaxed improvisation
