The title of Nothing’s third record, Dance on the Blacktop, is a phrase Palermo learned while serving two years in prison in the early 2000s (he stabbed someone in a brawl, claiming self-defense). It is slang for fighting, but Palermo adopts it to mean something like riding the inevitable chaos of existence with grace. Dance on the Blacktop tempers its self-defeatist lyrics with pummeling light, and while the songs here hew closer to billowing 1990s alt-rock than on previous records, there’s still an appealing minimalism to the sound . With a disarmingly sweet vocal turn, the strummy dynamism of Us/We/Are oddly recalls Third Eye Blind’s Stephan Jenkins. I know it sounds crazy/There’s static in my head/Everything red, Palermo sings, likely reflecting on his brain trauma.
Possibly their strongest album so far, Nothing’s Dance On The Blacktop soars with a powerful blast of effulgent melodic strength to create metallic dream music that you can bask in or pound nails with. Reply Notify me Helpful. This album bleeds with emotion and is another highlight in the modern day shoegaze/dream pop scene, of which Nothing is at the forefront. This album is amazing. Perhaps not as amazing as Tired of Tomorrow, but very close.

There’s a reason fans are so passionate about Philadelphia’s Nothing, whose third album, ‘Dance On The Blacktop, sees them master their signature blend of shoegaze, grunge and post-hardcore. The lyrics are often nihilistic, but the music – which oscillates between buzzy, minor-key guitar riffs and pretty, delicate harmonies – is weirdly uplifting, appearing to rise above the hardship therein. And, Lord knows, frontman Dominic Palermo has known some hardship. As he has acknowledged, the man has the kind of luck you could write a brutally black comedy about. Imprisoned for stabbing a man during.
Nothing wrong with this album. 4 months ago. They are so 1998. This album is lot less expressive than Tired of Tomorrow. Hail on Palace Pier is great tho. ridiculously beautiful.
