Ray McKinley (June 18, 1910 – May 7, 1995) was an American jazz drummer, singer, and bandleader. McKinley got his start at age 9 working with local bands in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. He left home when he was 15 and played with Milt Shaw's Detroiters and the Smith Ballew and Duncan-Marin bands. His first substantial professional engagement came in 1934 with the Dorsey Brothers' Orchestra. It was with the Smith Ballew band in 1929 that McKinley met Glenn Miller.

Howdy Friends (Theme). feat: Ray McKinley Orchestra.
McKinley brought in arranger EDDIE SAUTER, who is best remembered for his advanced arrangements he did earlier for Benny Goodman, Such as "Benny Rides Again", "Superman", and "Clarinet a La King". By 1946, Sauter had pulled out all the stops and wrote probably the best and most advanced arrangements in Jazz history. His arrangements were so complex that he had to co-direct the band with Ray McKinley, something he did later with Bill Finegan. Thank heaven Eddie Sauter got the chance to stretch out and write for the Ray McKinley Band of the late '40's. Otherwise, big band lovers might never have been treated to some of the best big band writing (and playing) ever. Anyone aspiring to be a jazz music writer should listen to anything Sauter has ever written. This music was the prelude to the innovative Sauter-Finegan Orchestra of the 1950's.
