What a killer album the guys in Mutoid Man put out! Definitely one worth checking out! This is a band that deserves more recognition then they get.

Mutoid Man is an American rock band formed in 2012 in Brooklyn, New York by Cave In vocalist/guitarist Stephen Brodsky, Converge drummer Ben Koller, and bassist Nick Cageao. They have released one EP and two studio albums to date.

Since then they've functioned as a three-piece, writing and recording in the studio as well as live, which makes the music on Bleeder, their debut full-length, gel. Don't expect to hear the same muddy sound here. Mutoid Man enlisted Kurt Ballou as producer, and based on his other work behind the glass, he has his own ideas about sound. Bleeder is cleaner but it's just as heavy. One can even argue that the sonic expansion adds to its heft. Check the pre-release track "Reptilian Soul," where the boundaries between hardcore, hard rock (à la Kyuss) and prog metal vanish.

That hasn’t changed on Bleeder, Mutoid Man’s first full-length. If anything those elements have become more pronounced, fighting each other in a war for supremacy that ends in a clench-jawed détente. The tension on tracks like "Sweet Ivy" and "Deadlock" is delicious; Brodsky’s needling riffs and liquid runs pit themselves against his alternately melodic and murderous vocals. The album’s title track-which, at six minutes, is twice as long as any other song on the filler-free disc-simmers, lunges, and edges toward the dissonantly psychedelic, even as it throws off a chunky post-hardcore vibe.
