Duke Ellington and John Coltrane. This is a type of best of both worlds in terms of jazz for me right here. By 1962, Coltrane had settled in with what would be known as his classic quartet which lasted for four solid years. This quartet featured Jimmy Garrison on bass, Elvin Jones on drums, and McCoy Tyner on piano. For this recording, Tyner opted to step aside and let another legend tickle the ivories. By 1964, Coltrane’s quartet was at the peak of their career and considered the best jazz group of the time. Coltrane had gone through a lot at this point, battling with drugs and other personal issues while trying to maintain his playing. By then, he had become very spiritual, turning to his faith in his times of need.

A look at the dates and the label easily give the story away, for on this single disc, you are going to hear the formative Coltrane when he was still working for Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, not the spiritual visionary of the 1960s

AM: From athletes to musicians, the truly great artist of any medium always make it look (or in this case, sound) easy. And that’s the feeling you get while listening to Coltrane Jazz, which features some of his more straight-ahead work (especially as it pertains to this list). RK: This album stacks flawlessly constructed layers of sound on top of one another until an exquisite final track is achieved. On Love, by the time piano joins the mix, the listener is wrapped up in one of the most beautifully complex musical stews ever created. However, it took someone on the level of John Coltrane to really blow it up, and he did so with help of his aforementioned quartet and a host of other players. Namely, you’ll hear cats like Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, and Freddie Hubbard flexing their brass within a nonstop musical trip. Remember that Trane quote from the beginning of this piece?

What is the best John Coltrane album of all time? The saxophonist and composer is easily one of the jazz greats of the 1960s, with classic albums like A Love Supreme and Blue Train.

This album, recorded in September 1957, marked John Coltrane’s comeback after his heroin use led to his ejection from Miles Davis’ band earlier in the year. After going cold turkey and successfully beating his addiction, Coltrane was a man reborn whose music became more sharply focused, especially after he began working with Thelonious Monk. He was still playing with Monk’s quintet when he recorded Blue Train with a sextet that included young trumpet genius Lee Morgan. As well as being arguably Coltrane’s best ever album, A Love Supreme is also one of the greatest albums in jazz – and, significantly, it spawned the spiritual jazz movement.
