Jane Ira Bloom (born January 12, 1955) is an American jazz soprano saxophonist and composer. Bloom was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to Joel and Evelyn Bloom. She began as a pianist and drummer, later switching to the alto saxophone, and eventually settling on the soprano saxophone as her primary instrument.

Recorded on May 29, 1997 & January 2 & 3, 1999 at Acoustic Recording/ Brooklyn, NY.

Jane Ira Bloom's "Always Hope" is certainly distinguished by such a feel. Opening The Red Quartets with a swirl of sound from Fred Hersch's piano, Mark Dresser's bass, and Bobby Previte's drums, the soprano saxophonist creates nothing but liberty. As Hersch's foot pedal keeps his chords in the air, the leader's horn lines glide through them. Previte's cymbals match the pianist's pulse and sundry thoughts present themselves. That piece basically introduces you to what we're about," explains Bloom, "which is adventure. From the start, I've believed making an album is serious stuff. I want my records to hold up as time passes. These guys helped me to where the music feels just right.

On The Red Quartets Ms. Bloom performs with all the graceful majesty which has become her trademark while working with an ensemble which represents the creme’ de la creme’ of modern jazz and innovation. Here, Jane Ira Bloom enlists the support of jazz masters Fred Hersch (p), Bobby Previte (d) and Mark Dresser (b). Jane Ira Bloom emits a sense of joy through her soprano sax yet she is quite capable of hitting a somber note or two as in the opener, Always Hope. Emergency 11. Einstein's Red/Blue Universe. Biography by Chris Kelsey. One of the few full-time soprano saxophonists in jazz, Jane Ira Bloom is also recognized as one of the most accomplished. While not an avant-gardist per se, Bloom works on the forward edge of the mainstream.

This disc by Jane Ira Bloom has been in heavy rotation in my player since I received it. Both the compositions and musician-ship are impeccable. All musicians on this album are just in great form: from the heat of Mark Dresser to the chill of Fred Hersch and Bobby Previte's luke warm mediation letting Ms. Bloom fly over all and create wonderful music.
