Workingman's Dead is the fourth Grateful Dead studio album. It was recorded in February 1970 and originally released on June 14, 1970. The album and its studio follow-up, American Beauty, were recorded back-to-back using a similar style, eschewing the psychedelic experimentation of previous albums in favor of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter's Americana-styled songcraft. In 2003, the album was ranked number 262 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

In 1965, five uniquely talented artists from a variety of musical backgrounds came together to form a new kind of band. Guitarist Bob Weir, drummer Bill Kreutzmann and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan all served stints in various Bay Area rock and R&B outfits; Jerry Garcia played guitar and banjo in a jug band and bassist Phil Lesh was a composer of electronic music.

Some boundaries Workingman's Dead brok for them, was having an album based upon their musical upbringing. Which was Blues, Folk, Rock n Roll, and Bluegrass. And that is so easily seen. And they learned how to stack their vocals from their good friends Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Since they taught The Grateful Dead how to stack vocals, Jerry decided to lend his pedal steel guitar talent to their song "Teach your Children". 1. Uncle John's Band: A Grateful Dead classic. 48 years ago today the Grateful Dead’s ‘Workingman’s Dead’ hit record stores and radio waves all over the country. On this day in music history: June 14, 1970 - Workingman’s Dead, the fifth album by The Grateful Dead is released. Produced by Bob Matthews, Betty Cantor and The Grateful Dead, it is recorded at Pacific High Recording Studio in San Francisco, CA in February 1970. Following their last studio album Aoxomoxoa and the double live LP Live/Dead, both released in 1969, The Grateful Dead find themselves at a musical crossroads in their career.
The Grateful Dead was an American rock band formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California. The band is known for its eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, folk, country, bluegrass, blues, gospel, and psychedelic rock; for live performances of lengthy instrumental jams; and for its devoted fan base, known as "Deadheads". Their music", writes Lenny Kaye, "touches on ground that most other groups don't even know exists".
That album’s immediate predecessor, Aoxomoxoa, released in June 1969, was a carefully crafted effort full of intricately arranged songs brimming with playful, colorful and at times impenetrable lyrics dense with hallucinatory imagery. The recording sessions were long and expensive, and though the album contained a few future Dead classics-most notably St. Stephen and China Cat Sunflower -in the end it never really found a wide audience. Compared to the group’s live performances,.
