In 1998, Mac released a four-track EP, Paul Mac Presents Snapshots, on Interdance Records. It featured guest vocals by Stephen Allkins on "Ooh I Love Your (Disco)", Infusion on "Loco", Phil Smart on "Basic Boom" and Abel El Toro on "All Systems Are Go". Mac again worked with Silverchair's Daniel Johns as an alternative rock duo to release a five-track extended play, I Can't Believe It's Not Rock (2000). Vocals are variously supplied by Morris, Sarah McLeod, Luke Steele, Abby Dobson (ex-Leonardo's Bride), Lenka, and Ngaiire. Mac explained seeing Joseph
Sydney’s Paul Mac (real name Paul McDermott) is among the godfathers of Australia’s EDM scene. But the DJ/producer’s career has been anything but linear. McDermott became famous as half of the ’90s rave outfit Itch-E & Scratch-E with Andy Rantzen – he cheekily thanked local ecstasy dealers upon winning an ARIA. MF: Your pal Daniel Johns has got a very bold new project out in his ‘R&B’ Aerial Love EP. He doesn’t like looking backwards because there’s too many ghosts. Are you nostalgic? PM: I think the reason why I got into electronic music in the first place, and dance music in particular, was because it was forever looking forward. Often you’ll get asked in interviews, What’s your favourite album? or What’s your favourite song? And it’s like, The one that I haven’t heard yet that’s gonna blow me away. So I’ve never liked ‘retro’.
As time allowed, Mac alternated his releases with remix work for groups including INXS, Placebo, the Mark of Cain, and Powderfinger. He eventually alternated his releases with work done in partnership with Johns. In 2004, they released a full album under the name the Dissociatives, with Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes of the Presets rounding out the group. They also recorded the theme tune for quiz show Spicks and Specks, a version of the Bee Gees' song of the same name
