Year of No Light is a French post-metal band formed in Bordeaux in 2001. On their 2006 debut album Nord, the band combined a dark and aggressive sludge metal sound with psychedelic atmospheres inspired by post-rock and shoegazing. In 2008, they underwent a significant line-up change, replacing their vocalist by a third guitarist and a second drummer to become an instrumental sextet.

Fortunately, France’s Year Of No Light belong to the first group They’ve been a busy band since their inception in 2001, releasing a demo, 2 full length LPs, a live album, an impressive amount of splits, and even a soundtrack for the movie Vampyr. Tocsin, the band’s latest effort, starts off pretty ominously with keyboards, sparse tribal drumming, and some light guitar picking. The very album title, Tocsin, French for warning bell, gives a hint as to the content of this album, as its droning heavy sections sound like the tolling of the monolithic bell depicted on the cover. The production is flawless. Despite there being multiple layers of guitars, keyboards, and washes of electronic tones, you can still hear everything going on, and there is a LOT going on.

Year of No Light (often abbreviated as YONL) is a French post-metal band from Bordeaux formed in 2001 by Johan Sébenne, Bertrand Sébenne, Jérôme Alban and Christophe Mora. Since it's conception, YONL was never a "top priority" band but rather an instrumental side project. After one year of rehearsal, Christophe Mora left the band. Pierre Anouilh succeeded him. One month later, the band played live for the first time.
