Those recordings, issued in full for the first time, are the dominant revelation in the 50th-anniversary expansion of The Beatles. At 30 tracks on two LPs and dubbed The White Album for its blank-canvas sleeve, it was the group’s longest, most eclectic and emotionally blunt record – an admission of frayed nerves and strained bonds in the zigzag of garage-roots rock, delicate balladry, proto-metal fury, country ham and radical experiment.

Some of these surprises are subtle, amounting to slight turns of phrases, but there are also major revelations, including a looser, strum-along "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" and a version of "Good Night" shorn of its strings that finds Ringo supported by plucked guitar and harmonies from the rest of the Beatles.

The album follows a deluxe 50th anniversary reissue of the group’s Sgt. Pepper album last year. The set’s six CDs and Blu-ray disc are housed in a slipsleeved 164-page hardbound book, with pull-out reproductions of the original album’s four glossy color portrait photographs of John, Paul, George, and Ringo, as well as the album’s large fold-out poster with a photo collage on one side and lyrics on the other.
