The second 7-inch vinyl stands in the tradition of Deep Purple as it includes the band’s touching live version of Above And Beyond originally from the no 1. .
WHEN A MAN CRIES is very much in this serious Kent tradition and draws from the Scepter/Wand, Musicor/Dynamo labels that have been such a great source of material for us over the years. Very few of these tracks have ever appeared on CD and compiler John Ridley has come up with 12 gems new to Kent and myself, while furnishing us with facts and insights that enhance the musical experience. Though the epitome of this type of music is a southern soul wailer, only the soul is a constant as variations on "southern" and "wailer" are permitted within acceptable limits
In 1960s New York both the Scepter/Wand and Musicor/Dynamo group of labels were at the peak of the independent label scene. They had hit artists from across the musical spectrum, but with a very strong foot in the world of soul. Dynamic Grooves focuses on the labels’ output providing a snapshot of the scene in which they worked at this time.
The great thing about that from a personal point of view was that my co-founder of the 6Ts soul club, Randy Cozens, had championed Scepter and Wand since the mid-60s. Wand’s main acts, Chuck Jackson and Maxine Brown, were the most played and revered artists to feature at our dances. Florence Greenberg had formed the labels in the late 50s, recording mainly black acts from the New York area. The first few various artist compilations Kent issued featured mainly the lesser-known acts whose discs had been adopted by the Northern Soul scene. There were also solo sets from Chuck Jackson, Maxine Brown, Tommy Hunt and the Shirelles.
Scepter/Wand and Musicor/Dynamo were quintessential New York soul labels. He split for Musicor in 1966 where he got the Platters, Tommy Hunt and Inez and Charlie Foxx back into the charts. This is Kent’s ninth various artists CD of Scepter/Wand and Musicor/Dynamo recordings and the musical standard remains as high as ever – a testimony to the great talent the companies employed.
It was recorded during the Machine Head sessions in December 1971. According to Ian Gillan, "It’s just an example, for example, if you think of the phrase 'if a blind man cries' then it's pretty sad, those who are disadvantaged tend to be less complaining than those who are able-bodied".
