Louis Armstrong’s tribute to stride pianist and vocalist Fats Waller brings the soul. By the time Armstrong was recording for Columbia, in the ’50s, he had a renewed sense of mission, using the LP format to survey great traditions in American song. But cuts that feature the leader more extensively are even better, as with Armstrong’s clarion trumpet playing and blues singing on "Blue Turning Grey Over You". Satch Plays Fats Louis Armstrong.
Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller only worked together twice, briefly in 1925 in Erskine Tate's band and four years later in the New York revue Connie's Hot Chocolates.

Armstrong and "harmful little armful" Fats Waller played together briefly in 1925, then Louis performed many of the pianist's best-known tunes in 1929's New York revue, Connie's Hot Chocolates. It took him until 1955 (12 years after Waller's death) to record an album devoted entirely to the Fats songbook.
