Modulate is Bob Mould's fifth solo album, released in 2002. Although a few tracks on his previous release, The Last Dog and Pony Show, had featured tape loops and samples, Mould shocked his fans with such a dramatic embrace of electronica.

Robert Arthur Mould (born October 16, 1960) is an American musician, principally known for his work as guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for alternative rock bands Hüsker Dü in the 1980s and Sugar in the 1990s. Born in Malone, New York Mould lived in several places, including the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota area where he attended Macalester College. There, he formed Hüsker Dü in the late 1970s with drummer/singer Grant Hart and bass guitarist Greg Norton.

Before Bob Mould released Modulate in 2002, he knew he was going to cause a stir, but the signs weren't explicitly obvious that he would be making a complete change, even if the album before this one was called The Last Dog and Pony Show. He did experiment with mixing his sound up in the oddly hilarious rap track Megamanic off of the aforementioned album, but this is an entire album filled with computer effects, voice changes and other such oddities. It's possible to understand, sympathize, and agree with every one of Bob Mould's reasons for making Modulate, without liking it all that much. Modulate appeared in 2002 after a long period of musical inactivity from Mould. Following 1998's The Last Dog and Pony Show, he retreated from music, spending several years writing wrestling scripts while working on his next move - a move he telegraphed with the promotion of Last Dog and the album itself, which announced itself as the last of its kind.
