Kiss My Axe by The Al Di Meola Project (Cassette, 1991, Mesa/Bluemoon) Tomato. Inappropriate album title aside, there is plenty of fine guitar on this album. The rawness from di Meola's early days has been completely removed, often to the detriment of the music. I prefer some rough tones to provide texture and energy, but I also cannnot deny that di Meola displays some absolutely gorgeous playing on this album. Unfortunately for me, this kind of guitar is more likely to activate circuits in my brain that put me to sleep, rather than actively engage in the musical experience.

Di Meola's new approach was perfectly summarized when, in 1991, he told Jazz Times he wanted to be "enchanted" by the music instead of dazzling listeners with his considerable chops. Di Meola still has fine technique, but avoids overwhelming us with it, and shows more restraint than before. One thing that remains is the guitarist's strong interest in world music - this imaginative session liberally incorporates Latin influences (Brazilian, Spanish, Peruvian and Afro-Cuban) as well as Middle Eastern and African elements.
