African Scream Contest 2 ‎(2xLP, Comp, Gat). African Scream Contest 2 ‎(CD, Comp, Pro).

African Scream Contest, Vol. 2. (CD - Analog Africa 086). The first African Scream Contest compilation, an electrifying set of obscure soul and funk tracks recorded in Benin and Togo during the '70s, originally appeared in 2008, and has remained one of the most popular releases on the Analog Africa label. Its sequel finally arrived a decade later, after musician Lokonon André managed to track down all the artists on cratedigger Samy Ben Redjeb's wish list and license their songs, and was well worth the wait. The album lives up to its title on a few occasions, such as Picoby Band d'Abomey's "Mé Adomina," which is punctuated by piercing howls, particularly at its joyous finale. Even when it isn't quite as abrasive, the album's energy level never lets up.

African Scream Contest 2. Various Artists. It's been an entire decade since Analog Africa released African Scream Contest, arguably one of the label's most mind-blowing compilations and certainly one of its most raucous, traveling to the tiny nation of Benin for some truly gigantic sounds. On new release African Scream Contest 2, label founder Samy Ben Redjeb takes us right back to Benin for more Vodoun-inspired African funk. The album opens perfectly, with Les Sympathics de Porto Novo ripping into a psychedelic guitar opening that would give Hendrix chills before a blast of horns paves the way for peak disco dance beats and ecstatic shouts. The transcendently raw "A Min We Vo Nou We" lasts six minutes before coming to a sharp stop.

African Scream Contest. kind of a James Brown meets early Pink Floyd with some Otis Redding taped on the side for good measure. The CD package is also very well done with a nice big booklet covering the history of Soul-Psych. This album is a bunch of great funk that anyone can enjoy, without exception.

Africa Scream Contest – what a title – is the third compilation to come from Analog Africa compilation. Like the others, this disc proves that music doesn't have much truck with geopolitics. When New York slicksters thought they were at the centre of the universe - Studio 54, say – these bands were taking the coolest parts of funk, soul and disco, reinventing it and, at the same time, transforming their own music and culture. A lot of the reaction to West African blues has focused on origins and a going-back-to-roots, but the groove in Benin and Togo was far deeper and far more inventive.

African Scream Contest 2 - the new compilation out on Analog Africa. A new treasure-trove of Vodoun-inspired Afrobeat heavy-funk crossover greatness from Benin, West Africa, every bit as joyous a voyage of discovery as its predecessor was 10 years ago. A great compilation can open the gate to another world.
