Admirers of Karajan will probably own most or all of these symphony cycles from what was probably the pinnacle of the conductor's prolific career. However, if you are unfamiliar with Karajan's work, or well enough acquainted with it to desire further exploration, then this amazingly inexpensive anthology can be enthusiastically recommended. His tempos seem just right (not too breathless in the Scottish and the Italian) and his strong advocacy of the two lesser-known works (the early c-minor, no. 1, and the once-popular Lobgesang, no 2) may convince you that their relative neglect is unwarranted.

Symphony No. 4 in A major ("Italian"), Op. 90. 1. Allegro vivace. 3. Con modo moderato. 4. Saltarello, Presto. Symphony No. 1 in B flat major ("Spring"), Op. 38. 5. Andante un poco maestoso - Allegro molto vivace. 7. Scherzo, Molto vivace - Trio I, Molto piu vivace - Trio II. Herbert von Karajan. 8. Allegro animato e grazioso.

Unlike many other works, Karajan recorded this symphony just once and he got everything right the first time. It's my experience with Karajan that when the man records only once, it's usually quite an accomplishment. Check out his lone recordings of Richard Strauss' Sinfonia Domestica and Alpine Symphony or Mahler's Fifth to know just how masterful Karajan can be when he zeroes in and makes a near perfect record of a piece of music. The Rite of Spring is a different animal altogether, Karajan is not the right conductor for this work. He moulds and caresses the musical lines in the high-romantic German fashion, not the angular, abrasive, pre-civilization Russia that Stravinsky wanted to convey. Stravinsky was very critical of Karajan's earlier Rite of Spring recording so Karajan obviously wanted to take up the challenge of this consummate 20th-century masterwork again.

Brahms Violin Concerto & Symphony No. 3 – Janine Jansen – Herbert Blomstedt – Tonhalle Orchester Zurich – Tonhalle Maag, June 28, 2019. Janine Jansen had to come back out four times. Well, to make it short, I’m so happy I went. Now to the 3rd symphony. Here, the energy taking from the furious beginning with the violin concerto certainly continued after the break. The two most outstanding moments here were the famous 3rd movement, which you may know from several commercials and other uses in the movies, but even more impressively in the finale. Schumann’s symphonies have long been underrated. The idea of Schumann cannot compose for orchestra has been going around in musicology circles for many years. OK, he’s no Beethoven or Brahms, but I still really like his symphonies, especially no. 3 and 4.

The Third Symphony receives a glowing performance with steady tempos and the intermezzo-like third movement has a particularly autumnal radiance. The visionary Fourth is sublime from start to finish, with the tango-like rhythm of the opening especially seductive in Rattle’s hands and the passacaglia finale (Brahms’s greatest symphonic movement?) sublimely phrased. It is five decades since Herbert von Karajan’s 1963 set of the Beethoven symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic was released. I’ve never heard the last movement of the Italian Symphony dispatched with such brio. It’s altogether sunnier than Brüggen’s recent recording.
