Wolf Escher turned to Modern Jazz while studying music in Dortmund. He played in the Peter Heidemann Quintet, and performed with Ingfried Hoffmann's big band at the Kölner Jazz Festival in 1967. In 1969 he recorded his first single with the Wolf Escher Quintet for the legendary JG label. This single is a much coveted collector's item today. He subsequently toured with the Big Bands of Johannes Fehring and Dusko Goykovich.
