If John Barry's score for Robin and Marian - here given its first commercial recording as part of Silva Screen Records America's series of the composer's works as newly recorded by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Nic Raine - is a minor effort, it's the fault of the screenwriter and director. James Goldman and Richard Lester were both interested in debunking period pieces, but Goldman, author of The Lion in Winter, wanted to do it in a serious, realistic way, while Lester, director of The Three Musketeers, opted for romance and irreverence

It seems evident that John Barry did not have an entirely happy time on Richard Lester's slightly different take on the Robin Hood legend. To start with, Barry's score was a last minute replacement for a rejected effort by Michel Legrand. On top of that, Lester had Richard Shores re-arrange two of Barry's cues when he wasn't happy with what Barry had written. The one noticeable thing about these two arranged cues is that, apart from not sounding like Barry originals, they also date the score. Then again, Nuns is a surprisingly strident cue for people usually accorded as being some of the most humble people around. The love theme is played in several incarnations and while it's quite lovely, doesn't quite stick in the mind as clearly as some of Barry's better known works.

I saw it decades ago on late-night tv, so I remember almost nothing except that I liked it. The Music. I've got the Sherwood bootleg LP in storage. This is arguably Barry's most bootlegged score, though The Black Hole may beat it if you count CD-Rs.
