The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull is the fifth full-length studio album by the band Earth. Earth embarked on a worldwide tour in support of the album. Bill Frisell is a guest on the album, playing guitar on tracks one, four, and five. The title is a reference to Judges 14:8 in the Bible. It tells the story of Samson, who tore apart a lion and when he returned, noticed a swarm of bees and some honey on the lion's carcass

Earth is a magnificent band originating from the United States and formed in 1990. They are pioneers in the genre of drone/doom. They split up in 1997 and reunited in 2003. Their discography has a quite elaborate range of influences and genres (drone, stoner, doom with country influences) and therefore opinions may differ greatly when it comes to an album. One might enjoy Earth's early work and the other might fancy listening to their somewhat more modern records. The album may not be challenging in the way early Earth albums were and from my vantage point it looks like Earth is moving into a grey zone between improvised minimalism and and a more structured song-based approach. I do not expect that the line-up of musicians who appeared on this album will necessarily appear on the next but who knows?

Earth’s fifth studio album sounds less like a hive of bees buzzing inside the skull of a lion and more like a band of giant mountain wizards playing heavy instrumental drone-rock to accompany the shifting of tectonic plates. The ending title-track is one of the most strangely beautiful compositions here - it starts with Eastern drones that give way to melodic arpeggios picked on the low strings of an electric guitar before slowly building on layers of noise while maintaining head-nodding tempos. Then, one-by-one, the sonic layers are reduced until we’re left with the opening drones.

Ah, I remember how it was way back in the good old days. Not only did I discover music but I also discovered the sights and sounds that shrouded me. My main musical preference was fast pop-punk. In fact, I enjoyed anything as long as it was based on speed and electric guitars. If I were an innocent, young child looking into my future, I would wonder why in the world I’d be listening to this album. If the point hasn’t been put across, this is a slow dark record.
