Markevitch, two years Kondrashin’s senior, was Westernized far sooner, by Switzerland and France, and his CAPRICCIO ESPAGNOL (LSO, 1962) originally filled out his sophisticated take on SCHEHERAZADE, which Philips regrettably have not reissued digitally. Markevitch’s CAPRICCIO has remarkable structural integrity and no want of excitement, and his recording is more poised and suave than the brash take Kondrashin made (with Toscanini’s orchestra) in Manhattan for RCA in 1958.

Scheherazade, also commonly Sheherazade, Op. 35, is a symphonic suite composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1888 and based on One Thousand and One Nights (also known as The Arabian Nights). This orchestral work combines two features typical of Russian music and of Rimsky-Korsakov in particular: dazzling, colorful orchestration and an interest in the East, which figured greatly in the history of Imperial Russia, as well as orientalism in general.
