The album was initially to be titled The Manson Family Album, a direct reference to serial killer Charles Manson’s own band. It is the only album to feature bassist Gidget Gein, who was fired for his destructive heroin addiction. Portrait has sold over . million copies worldwide and was certified Gold on May 29, 2003 by the Recording Industry Association of America. Portrait of an American Family Q&A.

The Manson Family Album is the first studio recording by American rock band Marilyn Manson, and a precursor to their debut studio album, 1994's Portrait of an American Family. It was produced by Roli Mosimann, and is composed of original takes and mixes of songs which would later be found on their debut album

On July 19, 1994, Marilyn Manson dropped the Spooky Kids from their moniker and released the 'Portrait of an American Family' disc. In July, 1993 Manson started working on the album with original producer Roli Mosimann at Criterial Studios in Miami. Using new material mixed with the most popular tracks from the Spooky Kids, the record was a mish-mash of content that didn't gel, even with samples. Finally, Manson changed the name of the album to Portrait of an American Family, which he felt more accurately represented the theme of the record - the alienation, rage and toxic rebellion that lay within the fabric of a supposedly well-adjusted society.

The Manson Family Album was intended to be Marilyn Manson's first studio album and is a precursor to Portrait of an American Family. It is comprised of the original takes and alternate mixes of songs that would later be found on the band's debut and due to the many differences between it and its final form, it can be considered an album unto itself. Initially, Manson sought out Roli Mosimann to produce the album and with him the band recorded an album's worth of material
