The Consort of Musicke is a British early music group, founded in 1969 by lutenist Anthony Rooley, the ensemble's Artistic Director. Members of the group have included such well-known artists as sopranos Emma Kirkby and Evelyn Tubb, alto Mary Nichols, tenors Paul Agnew, Andrew King and Joseph Cornwell, and bass Simon Grant. The Consort has gone through several major phases in its long life, reflecting the range of passions of Anthony Rooley

Jacques-Martin Hotteterre (29 September 1674 ? 16 July 1763), also known as Jacques Martin or Jacques Hotteterre, was a French composer and flautist. Jacques-Martin Hotteterre was the most celebrated of a family of wind instrument makers and wind performers. Born in Paris, he was the son of Martin Hotteterre (d. 1712) and Marie Crespy. a number of changes in the design of the transverse flute, though there is little concrete evidence for this.

There's a bit of the sheer tunefulness of Purcell's incidental music, and of the seriousness of his sacred and dramatic works, but the overall feel is of something experimental, of the open new trio sonata texture mixed with the tradition of English polyphony. These are sonatas of the pre-Corelli type, with sequences of short movements, and Purcell exploits their possibilities in highly imaginative ways. Both the King's Consort and a rival recording by the Retrospect Trio (an offshoot and rival of the venerable King's Consort) are good picks, but the Vivat label gets the edge here with its near-ideal small-auditorium sound. A very strong choice for Purcell fans.
