Trumpeter Steven Bernstein's Millenial Territory orchestra is inspired by the leader hearing some of the exciting late '20s and early '30s recordings of territory bands. While some of the music performed by his nonet is taken from that early period, including "Boy In the Boat," "Happy Hour Blues" and "Toby," they alternate with originals that are sometimes only loosely connected to the style. Even the revivals of vintage songs include adventurous solos and plenty of surprises, so MTO, Vol. 1 is more of a tribute than a re-creation

Bernstein's rough and tumble Sexmob quartet has been tearing down musical boundaries for well over a decade, but it is his large ensemble, the Millennial Territory Orchestra (MTO), that offers the most complete view of his multifarious abilities. Conducting a phenomenal group of soloists, he limits his wildly expressive brass excursions to brief interludes, providing himself a magnanimous bandleader as well as a stellar arranger.

Following up 2008's Diaspora Suite, the fourth in his Diaspora series, the prolific Bernstein now returns to his Millennial Territory Orchestra, a concept rooted in the trumpeter's love for the sound of the territorial pre-swing bands of the 1920s and '30s. Like 2006's MTO, Vol. 1, We Are MTO doesn't so much attempt to re-create that vintage music as extract its essence and reimagine it in a contemporary downtown framework.
