Biography by Scott Yanow. Expressive jazz vocalist with many excellent recordings plus sit-ins with luminaries like Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Clifford Brown.
Helen Merrill (born Jelena Ana Milcetic July 21, 1930) is an American jazz vocalist. Her first album, the eponymous 1955 release Helen Merrill, was an immediate success and associated her with the first generation of bebop jazz musicians. After a prolific 1950s and '60s when she recorded with Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown, Merrill spent time recording and touring in Europe and Japan, falling into obscurity in the United States.
Helen Merrill is the debut studio album by vocalist Helen Merrill, on which she's accompanied by trumpeter Clifford Brown in arrangements by the young Quincy Jones. Brown had recorded a somewhat similar album with Sarah Vaughan only a few days previously, on December 16 and 18, 1954. In 1995, on the fortieth anniversary of this debut album, Merrill recorded a tribute album to Brown, who had been killed in a car crash in 1956, the year after their collaborative album was released.
Helen Merrill is a great vocalist. She could sing anything. And she has proved it time and agai. ver 60+ years of professional recording. She does country tunes here but she has done smooth jazz, swing, pop, trad pop, an album of Beatles tunes, Broadway numbers, film songs, Tin Pan Alley and even Croatian folk songs. That’s not to say she doesn’t have her style.
